Sustainability
Which Sustainable Packaging Materials Work for Supplements?
Start with product protection and the disposal path
A sustainable option still has to protect the formula during storage and delivery. Barrier needs, moisture sensitivity, shelf life, closure requirements, and shipping conditions should be defined before choosing a material.
Then consider what happens after use in the markets where the brand sells. A material may be technically recyclable or compostable while local collection, sorting, or processing access remains limited. Clear consumer instructions matter as much as the material name.
Compare the common material families honestly
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic uses recycled content and can be a practical option when a rigid package still needs established barrier or closure performance. The recycled-content percentage and the package's end-of-life claim should be documented separately.
FSC-certified paperboard can support a credible sourcing story for cartons and other paper-based components when the relevant material and chain-of-custody documentation are available. It does not automatically describe every component in a complete pack.
Compostable materials require especially careful communication. Compostability claims depend on the relevant certification and the availability of appropriate facilities; a brand should not imply universal home-compostability or universal disposal access without support.
Mono-material flexible structures can be designed to simplify material composition, but recyclability still depends on the structure, local collection, and processing system. Treat design-for-recyclability and a consumer recycling claim as related but distinct questions.
Make the claim match the evidence
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides explain why environmental marketing claims must be clear, qualified, and supported. Ask for material-level documentation and have the final claim reviewed by qualified counsel or a compliance advisor before printing.
Common questions
- Is compostable packaging always the most sustainable choice?
- No. Compostability is only one consideration. Product protection, material sourcing, local composting access, and the accuracy of the consumer claim all matter.
- Can a brand say its packaging is recyclable?
- Only when the claim is supported for the specific package and the relevant recycling context. The FTC Green Guides are a useful starting point, and qualified review is appropriate before making the claim.
